Switching from Legacy BIOS to UEFI on your Windows system can improve boot speed and security. This conversion doesn’t require reinstalling Windows or losing your data. In this guide, we’ll show you how to do it step by step using the built-in MBR2GPT<\/a> tool. The process also includes converting the partition style from MBR to GPT without data loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using the MBR2GPT<\/strong> tool to convert the partition style from MBR to GPT. Then changing the boot mode in BIOS\/UEFI firmware from Legacy BIOS to UEFI. While the process is generally safe if it is done exactly as per this blog, anyway, it is always good to be cautious and backup your data<\/strong> before doing it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

4 Steps to Convert Windows From Legacy BIOS (MBR Partition) to UEFI (GPT Partition)<\/span><\/h2>\n\n

Step 1: Verify the Current BIOS and Partition Style<\/h4>\n\n\n

To confirm your system uses Legacy BIOS and an MBR partition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Press Win + S<\/strong> and type System Information<\/strong>. Open it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Look for the entry BIOS Mode<\/strong>. If it says Legacy<\/strong>, your system is in Legacy BIOS mode.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    1. Press Win + X<\/strong>, then select Disk Management<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    3. Under the Volumes<\/strong> tab, check the Partition Style<\/strong>. If it says Master Boot Record (MBR)<\/strong>, you’re using an MBR partition.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Step 2: Convert Disk from MBR to GPT<\/h4>\n\n\n

      2. Press Win + S<\/strong>, type cmd<\/strong>, right-click it, and choose Run as Administrator<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Run the following command to validate your disk:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
        mbr2gpt \/validate<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n
        This checks if your disk meets the requirements for conversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Convert the disk to GPT:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
          mbr2gpt \/convert \/allowFullOS<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n
          The \/allowFullOS<\/code> switch lets you convert without booting into Windows PE (Preinstallation Environment). The tool will shrink your system partition and automatically create a 100 MB EFI system partition, ensuring no data loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Step 3: Update BIOS\/UEFI Settings<\/h4>\n\n\n
          Now that your disk is in GPT format, update your firmware settings to boot in UEFI mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
